beeke’d beans

the dutch post office visited the studio today to discuss the stamp designs we are currently working on (of which more news soon) and this classic series came up in the discussion,: made in 2003 by none other than ‘anton beeke’ to comemorate 250 years of dutch coffee company ‘douwe egberts’, using a beautifully simple iconic coffee cup and a ‘coffee bean’ pattern

the more i think about it the more it strikes me that strong stamp designs very closely resemble posters in their singularity… (maybe this idea needs some more thought but i know what i mean…) these particular stamps were actually one of the first ‘scratch & sniff’ productions, more classic designs can be seen on the PostNL archive site here

digital stamps

the museum of communication in the hague have commissioned ‘fabrique’ to design a new archive site documenting more than 100 years of postage stamp design in the netherlands; complete with a timeline, searchable designer database and several special theme pages… (thanks to ‘antoine achten’ for the link)
