Google wave

Most people would recognise the ‘Google camera car’ if they saw it, these days. But how about the ‘Google camera boat’? Just over a month ago, a specially rigged boat (low to pass under the bridges) was circling around Amsterdam for three days recording the view from the canals.

Google have not given a release date yet, but before long you can join all the fat, wine-sipping yuppies & noisy students without even leaving your home.

We are not the first, venice can be seen here. Judging by that example what we are most likely to see are fat yuppies, noisy students and tourists; pointing their own cameras back at that strange boat, sailing by.

I grew to love posters

hansje_typograph_1

…i find repetitive work soothing, it calms me down and allows me some time to think about other things while being productive at the same time. I like the tension between systematic approach, legibility and (ir)regularity. I find it equally interesting to only draw the textures and end up with patterns…

the dating game

monteiro_designer_pick

…there will be people who have to hire a designer at some point in their lives. Maybe just once. Maybe on a regular basis. This article is for them. Because I want them to be able to do all of the things in that first paragraph. I want them to be happy. I want to give them the tools to choose a designer well. And still get home in time to inflate the bouncy house for Tristan’s birthday party this Saturday…

entertaining piece (as usual) from mike monteiro on picking the right person to do your job (clients pay attention)

…7. Don’t hire anyone who’s afraid to argue with you…

pay me

Pricing hourly punishes efficiency.
So this is a pretty bold statement and it should be taken with a grain of salt. Hourly pricing can be incredibly advantageous in certain circumstances, like when you receive that first email from potential clients and, through their thousand-word introductory essay lousy with emoticons and unnecessarily capitalized words, they paint a clear picture that they are completely batshit insane. You know that there will be many rounds of revision in your future and that over the course of working together you’ll be as much a therapist as a designer. Totaling those 500 hours at whatever your hourly rate is will equal a pretty good pay day.

much food for thought from jessica hische in her ‘guide to assigning the right value to what you do

It’s incredibly important for even young designers to always quote respectable prices. It can be very tempting to create artwork for a “cool” company for very little pay and the promise of insane exposure/ an incredible portfolio piece.
